How to Organically Clean your Oven

Michele Free - Wednesday, August 28, 2019

Have you looked at your oven lately? We all like to have clean surfaces where we prepare our food. Self-cleaning ovens will cook off the leftover food inside your oven, but it creates smoke, and takes energy. Other oven cleaners contain harmful chemicals we don’t want around our families. Here is how to organically clean your oven, for sparkling results.

Inside

Clean the inside of your oven

Make a thick paste with baking soda and water. Spread it over the dirtiest parts of your oven. If you are cleaning the door, lay out a garbage bag so it doesn’t drip on the floor.

Let soak for about 30 minutes, then scrub off with a scrubbing sponge soaked in vinegar. As you go, keep spraying with vinegar to help loosen the grit. If parts are really stuck, scrape off with plastic scraper.

Outside

Depending on the kind of surface you have on the outside of your oven, different products are available for cleaning. There are stainless steel cleaners available that are non toxic, and glass cleaner will always do the job.

Knobs

Baking soda and vinegar work for these, too. Pull off knobs (if you can) and soak, otherwise, spray thoroughly with vinegar. Wipe down underneath surface with a baking soda/vinegar paste.

Front Glass

Clean between your oven's front glass

You can clean between the oven glass in the door. Remove the drawer from beneath the oven, so you have room to reach up inside. Attach a cloth to the end of a coat hanger, and soak it with a glass cleaner. Reach the hanger up between the two layers of glass, and thoroughly rub it around. It may take a couple of repetitions to get it all clean, depending on how dirty it is.

Oven Grates

Put towels in the bathtub with 1 cup of liquid detergent. Run hot water over the top and let soak for 1-2 hours. Scrub off with a bristle brush (you can find them cheap at the dollar store).
