Winter Watering

Matt Rogers - Saturday, February 25, 2023

Maintaining your yard throughout the winter can seem like a daunting task. Lawns can deteriorate and be killed by weather conditions. Especially with Colorado’s harsh freezes and low temperatures combined with dry conditions and ever-fluctuating weather. Winter watering is a great way to try to ensure that the lawn returns to full strength in the spring. Water helps the roots stay protected from the cold and adequately hydrating your lawn can help it make a stronger return in the spring. Here are some tips and tricks to make the most of watering your lawn during the winter.

  1. Be sure to water when the weather is warm enough for the roots to take in moisture. This should not be done if it is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Beware of overwatering. Just as in springtime, overwatering can lead to rotten roots and fungi killing off the grass. Watering only a few times a month on warmer days should be sufficient to keep the lawn healthy and make a strong return. Your lawn will not need as much water in the winter as in the summer, as it will not evaporate as quickly in the cold air.
  3. Disconnect your hose from the spigot after watering. Failure to disconnect during the winter can lead to burst pipes and damage.
  4. Apply the water before midday so that it has the most amount of time to soak in before any freezing temperatures at night.
  5. Do not water over the top of ice sitting on the lawn. Waiting until those sections have thawed before watering. Watering over frozen sections can cause more ice to build up and keep the grass from getting proper hydration from snow melt.
  6. Be sure not to miss the corners and any areas that are close to buildings, as these areas tend to dry up faster and need moisture just as much as other sections. When watering, do just enough to fully saturate everything.

Once everything thaws in the springtime, aeration, and fertilization can be a tremendous help to getting the grass healthy again.
